According to a new analysis by LIGNET.com , although President Obama since 2009 has supported, provided certain conditions are met, negotiations with the Taliban for ending the war in Afghanistan, there is no evidence that negotiating with the Taliban would lead to lasting resolution of the conflict in Afghanistan.
According to the LIGNET analysis:
“There are few, if any, compelling reasons for the Karzai government or the US to enter into direct talks with the Taliban at this time. The political legitimacy conferred by such talks seems wholly at odds with conditions on the ground. The Taliban is highly factionalized, including a convoluted mixture ranging from religious zealots to drug traffickers. Even if it was possible to identify a faction willing to engage seriously in talks, it almost certainly would not be representing the views of the entire organization. Given its history of unremitting harsh treatment against women, the Taliban is unlikely to ever uphold Article 22 of the Afghan constitution, one of the conditions for talks laid down by the US and Afghan presidents.”
