Analysis: Kabul Attack Complicates US Withdrawal

According to a new analysis by LIGNET.com , yesterday’s elaborate Taliban attack on the US embassy and NATO headquarters bodes poorly for a negotiated settlement with the Taliban.

Heavily armed Taliban fighters seized a high rise building under construction in Kabul yesterday to attack the U.S. embassy, NATO headquarters, and the Afghan intelligence agency with rockets and machine guns. It took NATO and Afghan forces 20 hours to end the assault against the attackers who were wearing suicide vests. At least seven people, including four policemen, were killed as well as nine insurgents, according to the BBC.

LIGNET.com assesses that the attack raises serious questions about U.S. Afghanistan policy:

“This incident raises further questions about the realistic prospects of the Obama administration’s plan to negotiate a political settlement with the Taliban to facilitate a clean and rapid exit from the country since the Taliban and its allies appear to prefer to take advantage of NATO troop draw downs and a U.S. withdrawal to settlement talks.”
