Back in 2005, he thanked Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez for providing cut-rate heating oil for Kennedy's Citizen's Energy Corp. to distribute to needy Massachusetts residents.
"Here you have a country that is being led by someone who cares about the poor, who is providing us assistance to the poor, and he's getting criticized," Kennedy said at the time.
But Kennedy's admiration for Chavez, however sincere, made a handy propaganda tool for a dictator who has trafficked in anti-Semitism and homophobia and has, according to a recent report by the group Human Rights Watch, undercut human rights and democracy in his homeland.
Kennedy says he doesn't agree with everything Chavez has done, but has continued to defend his dealings with him even as Venezuelan strife has worsened.
