US Ambassador Hopeful for New Iraqi Government

WASHINGTON — The outgoing U.S. ambassador to Iraq says that after five months of post-election "pushing and shoving" by Iraqi politicians, raising concerns about U.S. troop withdrawals, Baghdad may finally be headed to forming a new government.

In a National Public Radio interview Wednesday from Baghdad, Ambassador Christopher Hill said the pace of political progress in Iraq has quickened in recent weeks and that "things may be heading in the right direction."

President Barack Obama recently said his administration is still committed to withdrawing all but 50,000 U.S. troops from Iraq by the end of August.

Hill, a veteran diplomat, is leaving his post to become dean of Denver University's school of international relations.
