Greyhound Buses on the Road in England



The iconic American buses are coming to Britain for the first time in the brand’s 95-year history. Britain’s biggest train and bus company First Group, which acquired Greyhound two years ago, says it plans to start services from London to Portsmouth and Southampton on England’s south coast in September with fares starting at $1.60 — less than $3.

Popularized in Simon & Garfunkel’s song America, the buses are a longstanding feature of American pop culture. But you have to wonder if FirstGroup’s goal of wooing business travellers with free newspapers, wifi, and air conditioning is a tad ambitious. After all, using it two hours from London to Southampton isn’t quite the same as crossing the U.S. via Route 66.
