Oxfam Workers Killed in Northeastern Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan — Aid group Oxfam says it is suspending work in a northeastern Afghan province after three of its workers were killed there.

Oxfam says two Afghan staff members and a community volunteer died when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb in Badakhshan province. The group will suspend work while reviewing security measures.

Deputy governor Shamsul Rahman said Wednesday that Taliban insurgents who recently infiltrated the area were likely behind Saturday's attack in Shahri Buzurg district, about 185 miles (300 kilometers) northeast of Afghanistan's capital.

Badakhshan previously saw little insurgent activity, but last month the Taliban claimed responsibility for killing 10 members of a Christian charity in the province.
