Gov. Pat Quinn has decided to replace Illinois Department of Human Services chief Carol Adams, but she isn’t getting the boot -- Adams will instead head to Africa to take a $110,000-a-year job leading an expanded trade office in Africa.
Adams, who was appointed by former Gov. Rod Blagojevich in 2003, will join the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s Office of Trade and Investment in a newly created role as the "Illinois Representative to Africa," Quinn announced Sunday. Adams will be based out of Johannesburg, South Africa, and will also receive a housing stipend.
She will replace former state Rep. Monica Faith Stewart, who was picked by former Gov. George Ryan to run the trade office when it first opened in 2000. Stewart makes just over $83,000 a year, according to state records.
Adams won’t start her new post until after Jan. 1, and Quinn said it is likely she will be given additional staff members because the state’s presence “will continue to grow there.”
“We’re really expanding the mission, it’s not just trade,” Quinn said.
