Attorney General Alberto Nisman has blasted President Cristina Fernandez’s plan to establish an Argentinean-Iranian “truth commission” to investigate the July 1994 bombing of a Jewish center in Buenos Aires, the Jewish Chronicle reported.

The July 18, 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish community center left 85 dead and 300 people injured.

Iran has long been suspected of being behind the attack, and arrest warrants have been issued for numerous senior Iranian officials including former President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. But little co-operation from Teheran has been forthcoming.

Earlier this year, Fernandez, who has a good relationship with the Islamic Republic, won the Argentine Congress’ support for establishing the commission to investigate the bombing.

But thus far, no Argentinean investigators have gone to Iran to interview suspects — a requirement of the deal — and no members of the panel have been named, according to the Jewish Chronicle.

Nisman recently said he had serious concerns over Fernandez’s agreement with Tehran, saying it was unconstitutional and represented “undue interference” by the executive branch in matters that should be investigated by Argentine judicial authorities.

Earlier this week, Nisman announced that he is filing a lawsuit requesting that a judge formally declare the deal unconstitutional, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported.
