A Chilean court Friday found four men guilty in the fatal beating last March of Daniel Zamudio, a 24-year-old homosexual, according to the Santiago Times.

Zamudio was attacked in the early hours of March 3, 2012, in Santiago by assailants who kicked and beat him with a rock, carved swastikas into his skin, broke his leg, and burned him with cigarettes.

The four — Patricio Ahumada, Alejandro Angulo, Raúl López, and Fabián Mora — face prison terms of eight years to life when they are sentenced for the murder Oct. 28.

After the attack, Zamudio was hospitalized for close to three weeks in a medically induced coma. He died on the evening of March 27, 2012.

The attackers, aged 19 to 26, were arrested less than a week after the killing. A court held that they murdered Zamudio because of his sexual orientation, the Times reported.

Zamudio’s death bolstered Chile’s gay-rights movement and led to the passage of the so-called Zamudio Law last year.

The statute increases penalties for bias-motivated crimes. According to to the Movement for Homosexual Integration and Liberation (MOVILH), a Chilean gay-rights advocacy group, 20 people were killed in the country between 2002 and 2012 because of sexual identity or orientation.

According to Gay Star News, thousands of people turned out for Zamudio’s three-hour-long funeral procession last year.
