While former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was laid to rest in a grand ceremonial funeral on Wednesday, it was her 19-year-old Texas granddaughter who created excitement in the British press.
Amanda Margaret Thatcher read from the New Testament book of Ephesians — leading Jonathan Freedland, a columnist for The Guardian, to speculate on Twitter
“whether somewhere a Texas Republican operative is watching Amanda Thatcher thinking ‘Wonder if she has political ambitions . . .’”
Amanda is the daughter of Sir Mark Thatcher and Diane Burgdorf, daughter of the Dallas car dealer Theodore Burgdorf, whose 2005 divorce was highly public, according to Foreign Policy magazine.
She now lives with Burgdorf, her stepfather, and older brother Michael. Amanda attends the University of Richmond and has served as a missionary in China, Foreign Policy reports
Voted “most likely to change the world” by her classmates, Amanda and her brother were raised in South Africa — and she was a favorite of her grandmother, Foreign Policy reports.
