LIGNET: Syrian Opposition Reignites Debate Over Asylum for Assad

In a dramatic reversal, the head of the new Syrian opposition coalition has called for talks with the Syrian government to try to end the country’s nearly two-year uprising. Although he has received qualified support from some players, the announcement took some members ofthe fragile opposition coalition by surprise. The question of what should happen to Bashar al-Assad if likely to cause a major rift as coalition members may find it impossible to agree on whether asylum is an acceptable option.
