The countries of South Asia are embarking on a new year that is almost certain to be characterized by political turmoil as most are approaching elections that are likely to be marred by protests and acts of terrorism. Already a avolatile region, it is expected to become even more unstable, a worrying prospect for the United States and its allies, who are preparing to withdraw from Afghanistan in 2014 and were hoping to leave the region more stable than when they arrived.
