Sinn Fein has asked CNN to stop referring to its president Gerry Adams as a “former IRA paramilitary commander.’’
The political party, the second largest in Northern Ireland and the largest nationalist party, told the network it wants Adams called by his “proper title’’ — the president of Sinn Fein.
The request was made to CNN correspondent Nic Robertson, who was reporting on the recent controversy over the flying of the British flag at Belfast City Hall,
TheJournal.ie news website reports.
During the report, he referred to Adams being a “former IRA paramilitary commander . . . now the province’s most powerful, Catholic politician.’’
Adams has repeatedly denied he was a member of the IRA, despite numerous claims by political observers he was.
Last September, Irish Taoiseach Enda Kenny claimed that Adams had been a member of the IRA’s Army Council.
A Sinn Fein spokesman said CNN officials granted the request and “were happy enough to do that.”
