Bhutto Son's Role in Pakistan Election Uncertain

Wednesday, 27 Mar 2013 10:31 AM

ISLAMABAD — Members of Pakistan's outgoing ruling party say late Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's son may play a less prominent role in the upcoming election campaign because of security concerns and political infighting.

That could make the election tougher for the Pakistan People's Party. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is the only male heir to the Bhutto political dynasty.

Three party officials told The Associated Press that the young Zardari recently left for Dubai because of security concerns and would not make many public appearances at rallies. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity late Tuesday because they were not authorized to talk to media.

Pakistani presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar denied the reports of infighting Wednesday and said Zardari would be involved in the election campaign.
