JOHANNESBURG — Prosecutors in South Africa say they've opened a new investigation into the disappearances of two men in 1988 linked to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, the former wife of Nelson Mandela.

A statement released Tuesday by South Africa's National Prosecuting Authority said that "recently obtained information" may have put investigators onto possible locations where the men's remains are buried. It said no exact sites have been found.

The missing men are Lolo Sono and Siboniso Shabalala. They disappeared in November 1988 and had last been seen at Madikizela-Mandela's home in the Soweto area of Johannesburg.

Madikizela-Mandela was convicted in 1991 of kidnapping four young men and taking part in assaults on them. Initially sentenced to six years in jail, she was ordered to pay a $3,200 fine on appeal.
